An acceptable defense Essay Insanity: Insanity defense has been considered by many as a ââ¬Å"loopholeâ⬠in the law allowing a number of guilty people to be set free. However, this so-called ââ¬Å"loopholeâ⬠does rarely set people free of criminal charges. Moreover, most of the cases involving insanity defense are murder cases. Many scholars, judges, attorneys and clinicians are said to be divided concerning the definition of insanity. In reality, though, it is not possible for them to be truly divided concerning the definition of insanity seeing that clinicians today have modernized means of determining a personââ¬â¢s mental state by means of psychological testing and interviews. What is more, psychologists are aware that there are neurological processes affecting a personââ¬â¢s mental state. Hence, brain scans can easily be used to understand the physiological condition of an individual charged with murder. Even the history of insanity will be made available through such brain scans, seeing that there is a genuine difference between the neurological processes of people showing abnormal and normal behavior. Therefore, scholars, judges, and attorneys must know that their understanding of the definition of insanity is irrelevant if clinicians are available with scientific evidence of insanity of an individual charged with murder. Given that psychological testing too is scientific, there should be no ââ¬Å"loopholeâ⬠whatsoever in this area. As a matter of fact, insanity is an acceptable defense. Eric Michael Clark shot a police officer to death because he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and believed that aliens were stalking him. According to the law of Arizona concerning insanity defense, the man had to prove with ââ¬Å"clear and convincingâ⬠evidence that he was too mentally ill to know that he was wrong to murder an innocent police offer. The Supreme Court got involved in Clarkââ¬â¢s case. Fortunately, the man was backed by the American Psychiatric Association in addition to the American Psychological Association ââ¬â two entities based on true scientific principles. Most states of America have differing laws regarding insanity defense. Now with the support of both the American Psychiatric Association as well as the American Psychological Association ââ¬â who believe in helping out mentally ill individuals that have been charged with murder although their mental health is not in their control ââ¬â it is hoped that the states of America will work on a single law on insanity defense in order to make the ââ¬Å"loopholeâ⬠in the law completely vanish. This single law would also make insanity defense cases more straightforward than before. After all, abnormal psychology is a science which has made it clear that there is an illness called paranoid schizophrenia, and there are many people suffering from illusions, delusions, and hallucinations. To doubt that these people are ill is, in fact, insanity as well as a sin. This is because we will be depriving of treatment a lot of mentally ill folks if we do not even believe that they are mentally ill. And, what if these people enter jails to commit more murders? What if they kill themselves in prison after they have been unlawfully charged with crime? Whose responsibility would that be? In point of fact, mentally ill people require immediate healing instead of punishment. Besides, putting them through court trials may be worsening their mental condition. Many people who oppose the insanity defense have assumed that mental illness is a myth, and that those who label others as mentally ill are actually imposing violence and control on people. Thomas Ssasz argued that psychologists and psychiatrists use such labels only to make political and ethical decisions. It can be argued, however, that people who are unaware of the scientific basis of abnormal behavior are ignorant at best. Such people are the reason why books on the history of abnormal psychology claim that in the olden times people killed numerous mentally ill people simply because they were mentally ill. There was no treatment for such people, and nobody cared enough to stand for their right to be treated. Slowly but surely, future generations began to believe in the reality of mental illness. ââ¬ËHumane treatmentââ¬â¢ of the mentally ill was suggested as a cure. Today, however, we are abusing the principles of ââ¬Ëhumane treatmentââ¬â¢ by putting the mentally ill people through prolonged court trials. It would be best, therefore, for society to acknowledge that first of all, psychology is a science just as much as biology; and psychologists and psychiatrists are qualified to determine the mental condition of an individual. If, in fact, mental illness were a myth, the Supreme Court and everybody else involved in insanity defense trials would have worked on also closing down mental hospitals as well as the clinics of the well-educated psychologists and psychiatrists, who happen to know their science more than lawmakers would ever be expected to understand psychology. The fact that the government has not closed down psychiatric clinics and mental hospitals shows that society at large does instinctively believe in the reality of mental illness and realizes how painful it can be. The Detrimental Effects of Traditional Bullying and Cyber Bullying Ess
We have all heard the phrase ââ¬Å"sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt meâ⬠on the playground or school bus ride home. The phrase was normally thrown out to bullies during a fight in the schoolyard, pushes in the hall, food thrown in the cafeteria, or during the endless teasing and taunting on bus rides to/from school. According to a national survey conducted by the National Center for Education Services, U.S. Department of Education in 2002, 32% of students in grades 6-12 reported being bullied. Only 9% reported injuries or needing medical attention. Fast forward to 2011 when these same victims of traditional bullying are now college-aged. After suffering the detrimental effects of their traditional bullying experiences, these same individuals now face a new form of bullying with the help of technology: cyber bullying. With the help of high-tech methods of communication, bullies are targeting their victims in non-traditional forms; not with a push or punch thrown, but with words. Words, after all, do have meaning. ââ¬Å"If they didn't, there would be no such thing as understandable communication. If words did not matter, why would anyone write a poem, a book, an article, or song lyrics? Why would we try to talk to each other, if words did not matter? Heidi Roizen has invested time and effort in developing and sustaining relationships/networks in the computer industry, especially in the Silicon Valley area, throughout her professional career. As she moves into her venture capitalist role, her networking efforts have the following strengths ââ¬â â⬠¢Includes executives including CEOââ¬â¢s, thereby giving her the experience of interacting with these business leaders.Since she has established relationships with many and her credibility is proven, which is an important criterion for business leaders; this is a critical skill in her new role. â⬠¢Since she is not only well known in the internet industry but is also well respected, her joining Softbank provides positive feedback about the new group making it an attractive opportunity for many. To maintain it? Heidi Roizen is a very well know business leader in the computer industry sector, especially in Silicon Valley. During the course of her career she has built a vast network of connections. The basic reason for her vast network can be attributed to her innate extrovert and high energy personality coupled with a desire to interact and help people with high caliber and engaging personalities. In addition, she was also required to cultivate relationships to support the software company, T/Maker, which she co-founded in the early phase of her career.The primary objective was to market the companyââ¬â¢s product. Her s trategies towards developing relationships included ââ¬â â⬠¢Follow the ââ¬Ëwhat can I offerââ¬â¢ approach. In her interactions with people she planned carefully on how to help their projects/needs. During her time at Tandem, she had opportunity to work with the companyââ¬â¢s CEOââ¬â¢s and through her approach she built relationships with the CEO. Relationships are built on a combination of professional-social interactions. She is known to have regular parties at her house. She used these events not only to build her relationships but also provide networking opportunities to her guests. As I compare my social/professional network to Heidi Roizenââ¬â¢s, one of the biggest differences is the number of people we know-my LinkedIn contact list is at 100+ while I guess Heidiââ¬â¢s would be 500+ category. After going through this article I have realized the significance networking can have on oneââ¬â¢s profession and moving forward will like to The commonalities between our relationships include â⬠¢Quality of interactions rather than quantity.I have some very good friends whom I only meet once/twice per year yet the relationship has been sustained. â⬠¢ Relationships have to be on an even footing. I make concerted efforts to ensure reciprocity is maintained from my end. There have been occasions in the past where I have discontinued relationships when I felt the other individual was always asking for help. Some differences that occur in our relationships are â⬠¢Heidi is very social and has parties almost every weekend in her house. This is not the case at my place. There is a very strong emphasis in her life on networking, which is not the case for me. She seems to invest time in relationships with the intent of leveraging them for future benefit either for herself or other acquaintances. This becomes clear at the end of the case during her time Softbank she referred people to organizations that will help her business interest. In my case, relationships can sometimes be used to exchange ideas or just have fun without the intent of obtaining any benefit. â⬠¢I am generally not looking to bring people together for mutual benef it. â⬠¢She makes an effort of meeting new people through attending trade shows, participating in conference etc.In my role, I have opportunity to attend technical conferences but my primary intent there is to acquire knowledge rather than meet new people. In my opinion one of the biggest reasons for the differences is our personality type. She is an out-going, high energy person with a passion for meeting new people. This means that interacting and meeting new people provides her with fuel to get recharged in life. I am an introvert who enjoys meeting people but feel drained after these experiences and need alone/close family time to recharge.In addition, differences between Heidi and me can also be attributed to our professions. Since she has primarily worked as entrepreneurs/business developer, my role is to develop manufacturing processes. I believe there is a fundamental difference between these roles, her job needs interacting with a large number of people whereas in my cas e knowledge about the processes is more important. ? 4) What suggestions would you give Roizen for adjusting and maintaining her network as she became more involved as an internet venture capitalist?I will give her the following suggestions â⬠¢She should not try to sustain every relationship that she has established over the years. She should create of priority list of people and maintain relationships with those who meet her basic requirement of being ââ¬Ësmartââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëgood qualityââ¬â¢ as well are value added in her new role. She has to juggle three critical roles ââ¬â family, work and network management. If she focuses too much on trying to maintain her network, there is a high probability that one or both of the others will suffer. She should focus on creating some relationships with people who are not in the same industry sector as her. This will be ââ¬âin sync with her outgoing personality and fulfill her ââ¬Ëneedââ¬â¢ to interact with people while not creating expectations/pressures in her profession. In the paper, it is obvious that many of the proposals, including meeting requests, being submitted are from with her network. Since most of these are being rejected and even though she is being very professional in rejecting these, it should be expected that some of these rejections are not well received.The negative reactions emanating from these may create stress for her and hamper her professional and personal life. â⬠¢She should also delegate the rejection letters to her subordinates as she seems to be spending too much time on them and this is taking away from her work time that may be detrimental for her career. â⬠¢Since, her current role is different from her past roles of being an entrepreneur/business developer there is limited need for keeping a very large network.

Market equilibration gives businesses the opportunity to mold to different changes that occur within the field of marketing. With market equilibration, market prices are established through product and service competition. For example, the amounts of goods or services required by customers are equivalent to the amount of goods or services produced by business. Market equilibration will allow the business and customer to be on the same sheet of music with product and prices. Law of Demand In order for market equilibrium to exist, the economy must have a need for a particular product or services. For there to be a demand, customers must be prepared to pay the established prices set by the industry. After the need for a particular product has been identified, manufacturers can begin producing the products. Law of Supply With supply, the product or services are made available to the economy. When a consumer is prepared to pay the price the market is asking market equilibrium is established. Should there be an imbalance of the demand or supply, there would be no equilibrium. In cases of supply imbalance, this could cause prices to increase which would inadvertently create business and revenue for the competition. Contrary to supply shortage is an excess of supplies. Excess supplies in the market will cause the market prices to drop resulting in an imbalance in the market equilibrium. Efficient Market Theory Efficient market theory is an investment theory that states it is impossible to ââ¬Å"beat the marketâ⬠because stock market efficiency causes existing share prices always to incorporate and reflect all relevant information (Investopedia, 2014). Because stock usually trades at fair values the efficient market theory keeps the stock exchange fair and honest. It prevents investors from selling at over inflated prices or purchasing at underrated prices. Surplus and Shortage Another cause of an imbalance in the market equilibrium could be a result of supply surplus. A supply surplus could also cause product prices to drop. Because there are more products available it could mean that customers just are not buying or that there are too many suppliers of the same product. The counter to this problem is to limit the number of like products available within the economy. The opposite effect to a surplus could be very beneficial to business competitors. A shortage would allow a competitor to move the business into the local economy and set prices high. As a result of shortages, this would allow the competitors to monopolize the market causing duress to surrounding companies. Real World Experience A real world example of the free market is when a customer looks for a bargain for the same product that both Wal-Mart and Target offers but at different price. Most consumers prefer to choose the item that has the best price versus the store name. Another factor that plays a role in the decision process is the location. If a customer has to drive further away to make a purchase they may elect to select the most expensive item. Customers can take advantage of supply and demand when the businesses are competing with each other. Conclusion In economics, manufactures and customers are the primary stakeholders in the equilibrating process. The market equilibrating process is difficult to balance because of the shifting market. By obtaining a good understanding of how the equilibrating process works, it will assist consumers on how to spend his or her money while saving at the same time.
